VOD (a.k.a. Video on Demand) is a popular feature on the Twitch livestreaming service as it allows for fans to view past broadcasts of their favorite streamers when they're offline. Due to the fact that these saved videos expire after a certain period of time has passed though, both streamers and viewers often like to download them and either store them locally or upload them to another service such as YouTube for viewing later.

Here's how to download your own Twitch VOD videos and those belonging to other users.

How to Download Your Own Twitch Videos

Twitch streamers can download all of their own previous broadcasts directly from the Twitch website. Depending on what sort of account you have though (i.e. regular user, Twitch Affiliate, or Twitch Partner) your window for downloading previous broadcasts will vary between 14 to 60 days after the initial stream, after which the video will auto-delete itself.

  • Enabling Broadcast Auto-Archiving: On the Twitch website, click on the drop-down menu in the top-right corner and select Settings. From this page, click on Channel & Videos link and then scroll down to the Channel Settings section. Check the box for Automatically archive my broadcasts. All of your future broadcasts will now save to your profile once they finish.
  • Downloading Your Videos: From the main drop-down menu, click on Video Manager. This will take you to a library of all of your saved videos of past broadcasts. Under each video thumbnail will be a link that says Download. Click on it to save the video to your computer.

You are not able to download someone else's past broadcasts from the Twitch website.

Twitch Leecher is a free program designed specifically to download videos from Twitch. It's a third party app, which means that it is in no way endorsed or supported by Twitch, but it is very well designed and boasts a clean interface that makes it significantly less intimidating when compared to other such programs.

Love the app until the recent update

I have been using Twitch app for about two years now, and have always loved it overall. I think they have always been getting better, adding more and more to the mobile app with the addition of mobile subscribing, the ability to double tap for chat, mobile bits and all. But with this last update I’m very disappointed. I had fallen IN LOVE with the ability to swipe from one streamer on my feed to another and then back to check between them and see how they were doing in game etc. but I am extremely disappointed that it is no longer an option. That was part of why I liked the mobile app so much. I could go from one streamer to the next seamlessly and then back again after a few minutes to enjoy both and get into whoever was currently in a game or who I was in the mood for. Now that I have to go back out and minimize a stream to scroll and find the other streamer then do the same again to go back is downright a decline and a step back from such an amazing feature. Over all the app still is good, allowing me to watch my favorite streamers with ease and interact with the chat fairly well but this feature was a must have and now I’m not sure I will be on the app as much. I’m very disappointed that they would take such a great feature with ease of use out of their app.

Honest critic

While the app wasn’t the best for mobile streaming, or watching older videos (had plenty of times where the video would reset entirely after watching an ad, or just randomly flicker and then reset back to the start of the video), it did work well enough, though I still don’t understand why the method of getting bits by watching ads was removed from mobile, despite already giving barely any bits by comparison to what you would get for watching an ad on your computer. The recent change of adding “recommended channels” to the home screen is buggy for me and doesn’t actually load correctly (being stuck with the initial error message as well as the “recommended channels”), but reloading the page works as a workaround for now.
I personally find most of the recommendations, despite being a push to make me watch more content.. distasteful, as most of them are people I followed and didn’t want to see again as the community was either to exclusive, or I didn’t really connect with the streamer. So honestly, it shouldn’t go on the home page where I have my listing of what I started watching, and the streamers I do want to watch and am following.

A major suggestion

I did not know this app defaults to auto play. Not to say there’s anything wrong with auto playing streams themselves but I was not aware of it and as a result I assumed a stream would end if I let the phone be. Halfway through a late night stream, I fell asleep without worries. However, I woke up and found my phone went from 100% to 13%. The streams stopped it from naturally falling into sleep mode after I unplugged it and set it to low power mode. This night of nonstop video playing no doubt harmed my phone battery’s maximum capacity, meaning it will be quicker to drop to 0% in the future and I did not intend for that.
My suggestion is that you please make a pop up for mobile that stops the stream, live or otherwise, and asks the viewer “Are you still there?” after one or two auto plays have already occurred without outside input. If there’s no further response, the phone can fall into sleep mode. If there is someone still watching, they’ll tap ‘Yes’ and keep watching.
Anyway, I’ve turned off auto play in settings, so this problem won’t happen for me again. But I still I wouldn’t want any people starting out with this app to make the same mistake I did.
